OVERLAND - HIDDEN KINGDOM OF BHUTAN CODE: CMBL01

Important Visa Note: To participate on this program, guests must have a valid India Multiple Tourist Entry Visa in advance of the program start date. Details on Visa requirements are also shown further below.
**Guests will need to send a colour scan of their passport to our Reservation Team when booking this program for the Bhutan Visa. Cel phone photos cannot be accepted.
Hinweis: Guests travelling with Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines should read further below for airline stipulations with regards to bringing this equipment on tour. This program is not recommended for guests with walking difficulty or those who utilize walkers, canes, wheelchairs or scooters.
DAY 1 – Thursday 14. April 2022
After disembarking the ship, you will transfer to the Colombo airport for a flight to Delhi.
Upon arriving, you will attend to immigration and customs formalities and then transfer to the Marriott Hotel or similar in nearby Aerocity. Dinner is included at the hotel.
DAY 2 - Friday 15. April 2022
After an early breakfast, you will transfer to the airport for a flight to Bhutan’s Paro Valley via Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. The flight to Bhutan will be visually spectacular as you will pass over the Himalayan mountain range.
As recently as 1961 all entry into Bhutan was still on horseback. Known as Druk-yul, the Land of the Thunder Dragon in Bhutanese, the country is only just emerging from the mists of its self-imposed isolation. Bhutan is a pristine, exotic land of high mountains with snow-clad peaks and lush valleys and a wealth of wildlife.
Its architecture is striking, as the buildings are characterized by their Buddhist style. The 17th-century fortresses known as dzongs are particularly stunning as they were constructed without a single nail and feature patterns of rich colors throughout.
Nestled deep in the eastern Himalayas between India and Tibet, Bhutan is overwhelmingly rural with 90 percent of the people engaged in agriculture or raising livestock. The country is predominantly Buddhist, with most people practicing the Tantric form of Mahayana Buddhism.
Upon landing in the Paro Valley, you will pass through immigration and Customs and then meet your Bhutanese guide. An hour’s drive through the picturesque countryside will bring you to the capital of Thimphu, a city situated in a large valley, traversed by the Wangchu River and overshadowed by high peaks.
Enjoy lunch at your hotel.
In the center of the city, you will find the golden-spired National Memorial Chorten. The royal grandmother Ashi Phuntsho Chagrin erected the stupa in 1974 in memory of her son. It contains a fine collection of Buddhist statues and is a center of Tantric Buddhism.
Continuing on, you will browse the Textile Museum that Melinda Gates co-founded. Its collection includes items and artifacts from various tribes around Bhutan.
Later, you will walk down Thimphu’s “high street” with its little shops of all description. You can expect to see a diversity of people that may include monks, businessmen and nomadic farmers that come to trade supplies.
Time will be allotted for you to relax at the hotel to refresh before attending dinner with the Venerable Mynak R. Tulku Rinpoche, Reincarnate, of the Lama of Mynak Rikhud Monastery in Tibet. A former Director of the National Library and Archives, he has represented Bhutan at many international conferences and written several books about the Bhutanese culture.
DAY 3 – Saturday, 16. April 2022
The day will begin with a moderate hike into the forested countryside through to the Tango Monastery that Lama Galway founded in the 12th century. Along the way, you will be treated to sweeping views of the Thimphu Valley. The hike is approximately 1 hour on a well-maintained path with some inclines.
The monastery’s main structure is a three-story tower with surrounding buildings that serve as classrooms and living quarters for more than 150 monks. In 1616, the venerated lama Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal is said to have meditated in a cave near this monastery.
You will return to the hotel around mid-day, after which you will drive to the Buddha Dordenma statue of Shakyamuni. From the elevated vantage point of this gold-gilded statute, you will enjoy panoramic views of the city.
Afterwards, you will visit the Drubthob Goemba and Zilukha nunnery to observe female monks going about their daily routines. It will be a rare and fascinating look into their lives.
The day’s sightseeing will end at Trashichhodzong, a beautiful medieval fortress and the summer residence of Je Khenpo, the Chief Abbot. The king’s throne room and government offices are also located within this massive complex.
DAY 4 - Sunday, 17. April 2022
Following an early breakfast, you will have two options. You may choose to spend your day with light activity by visiting highlights around Thimphu and in Paro. Or you may enjoy a hike up to Tigers Nest Monastery, one of the most revered pilgrimage spots in the Buddhist world.
The monastery perches precariously on a sheer rock face 3,000 feet above the valley floor. The initial ascent is along a mule track that passes through pine forests colorfully festooned with prayer flags. After visiting the monastery, you will enjoy a hearty lunch at a restaurant with views of the monastery across the ravine. After lunch the group will make their way to Paro.
HINWEIS: As there are inclines and steps to reach the monastery, this option is not recommended for guests with walking difficulty.
If you choose the less strenuous sightseeing option, you will first drive to Dochula Pass, a gap in the mountains that offers stunning views of the Himalayas. You will also see Dochula Monastery, a cluster of more than 100 chortens or Buddhist shrines that serve as a tribute to the service and leadership of His Majesty. The queen inspired its design.
On the way to the Paro Valley, you will stop at Simtokha Dzong, a fortress built in 1629 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, who was responsible for the unification of Bhutan. It is now a school where scholars teach the national language of Dzongkha and English, as well.
Upon arriving in Paro, you will check into the Zhiwa Ling Hotel. Set amid 10 gorgeous acres, the hotel combines the sensibilities of a fine Bhutanese guest house with traditional architectural details such as hand-carved wooden cornices and masterful stonework.
Following lunch, you will visit Kyichu Lakhang, one of the kingdom’s oldest and most sacred shrines. The complex is composed of two temples. Tibetan King, Songtsen Gampo built the first one in the 7th century. H.M. Ashi Kesang, the Queen Mother of Bhutan, built the second temple in same original pattern much later.
You will then visit a typical farmhouse for an insight into the unique Bhutanese lifestyle and cultural practices, where little has changed over the years.
You will also visit Paro Dzong or Rinpong Dzong, the so-called Fortress of the Heap of Jewels. The central tower and galleries are among the most beautiful in Bhutan and feature superb woodwork and classical paintings of Buddhist cosmology representing the universe as seen by two different philosophic streams. The bridge you cross on the way out was typically removed during war time to protect the fortress.
Later, you can meander down Paro’s main street and interact with the local Bhutanese while browsing the shops that line the thoroughfare.
The last event of the day for both groups will be a dinner with Khenpo Tashi, Director of the Paro Museum and one of the kingdom’s foremost scholars. He will offer a fascinating discourse on the unusual aspects of Bhutan’s GNP or Gross National Happiness.
DAY 5 - Monday, 18. April 2022
After breakfast, you will transfer to the airport for a flight to Mumbai via Delhi. Upon landing in Mumbai, you will transfer to the pier and re-board the ship.

DAY 1 – 16. April 2026
After disembarking the ship in Colombo, Sri Lanka, you will proceed to the airport for your flight to Mumbai, India.
Upon arrival in Mumbai, you will collect your luggage and then proceed to your overnight hotel, which is located within the airport. Following check in, you will enjoy dinner at the hotel before retiring for the evening.
DAY 2 – 17. April 2026
Following an early-morning continental breakfast through room service, you will check out of the hotel and transfer to the airport for the IndiGo Airlines flight to Udaipur. A full breakfast will be served during the flight.
Upon landing in Udaipur, you will transfer by motor coach and boat to the Taj Lake Palace, a massive 5-star hotel that occupies an entire island in Lake Pichola. Built in 1746 with white marble, the hotel was once the summer residence of the royal dynasty of Mewar. An incredibly opulent property, it will offer a glimpse into the lavish lifestyle of the royals.
After time to freshen up and enjoy a snack at the palace, you will depart for the nearby City Palace, a complex overlooking the lake. Built 200 years before the Taj Lake Palace, it has been expanded and renovated over the centuries. The palace is a maze of reception halls, residential suites and internal courts, the most elaborate being the Peacock Court, whose walls are adorned with peacocks modeled in high relief and faced with colored glass mosaics. In other instances, brilliant glass mosaics depict male attendants holding flywhisks and flags.
Despite its lack of symmetry due to more than two hundred years of building additions, architectural unity at the City Palace is achieved through the repeated use of `jharokas’ and domed `chatris’ that punctuate upper parts of the walls. A gilded sun-face emblem of the Udaipur rulers is prominently displayed throughout.
In an adjacent section lies the Crystal Gallery, which is said to hold the world’s largest collection of crystal, including the world’s only crystal bed. As you meander about, you will see countless objects d’art such as dinner sets, perfume bottles, washing bowls and more furniture, all made of crystal.
In time, you will return to the Taj Lake Palace for lunch and then continue on to the Jagdish Temple in the heart of the city. Maharana Jagat Singh built this three-story Hindu temple in 1651 and dedicated it to the preserver of the universe, Lord Vishnu. The architectural style is Indo-Aryan and features magnificent carved pillars, vibrantly painted rooms and intricately decorated ceilings.
You will see a different side of Udaipur while walking through the narrow by-lanes that wind through the city. Expect to encounter artisans creating Udaipur’s acclaimed miniature art, spice markets and homes with brightly colored folk murals featuring elephants, horsemen and peacocks.
Your last adventure of the day will be a sunset cruise on Lake Pichola, which was created in the 15th century by a wealthy merchant that built a small dam there to allow his grain carts to cross over during the monsoon. You can expect to pass the City Palace, the hillside hunting gazebo of the Udaipur kings and many traditional mansions or havelis known for their lavishly painted walls.
Dinner will be served at the hotel, where you will spend the evening.
DAY 3 – 18. April 2026
Following breakfast at the hotel, you will depart for the temple complex of Eklingji, a pilgrimage site for those who come to worship the Hindu God Shiva. Eklingji is the deity of this princely state and the Maharana traditionally rules as his prime minister. The complex’s main shrine was built in the 8th century with an elaborately pillared hall featuring a four-faced Shiva image in black marble. Nearby are the even older temples of Nagda, with rock edicts and stone inscriptions.
You will then proceed to Devra and participate in a cooking demonstration after which you will dine. Devra is a colonial-style house built on top of a hillock in the lap of the Aravali hills. It overlooks the city of Udaipur and offers grand panoramic views of the surrounding area.
On the return drive, you will have the option of visiting Sadhna, a women’s handicraft enterprise established under the Mutual Benefit Trust Act, which provides employment to women from rural and tribal areas of the Rajasthan State. The name Sadhna, which translates as “a means of accomplishing something” in Sanskrit, started with 15 women and has now grown to more than 600. A wide variety of their handicrafts will be on display and for sale, reflecting the diverse cultural heritage of Rajasthan.
The remainder of the evening will be at leisure allowing you to more fully enjoy the resplendent surroundings of Taj Lake Palace. Dinner will be served at the palace.
DAY 4 – 19. April 2026
After an early breakfast, you will transfer to the airport and fly to Goa via Mumbai. Light refreshments will be served during both flights.

It’s an early morning so breakfast will be via room service should you wish.
Meet your group leader in the lobby and transfer to the airport for a flight to Kathmandu.
Home to eight of the world’s 10 tallest peaks, the tiny kingdom of Nepal is ringed by the Himalayas. It is a land of contrasts, harboring a wealth of Buddhist and Hindu art and architecture. Nepal’s colorful capital city Kathmandu reflects 2.000 years of peaceful co-existence and exudes a unique blend of Hinduism and Buddhism, which is distinctly Nepalese in character.
On arrival In Kathmandu, you will be assisted with visa issuance and baggage collection.
HINWEIS: Please have on hand at least 1 passport sized photo for the Nepal Visa - Your tour manager will collect this from you in flight.
Nepal has eight World Heritage sites and has won two Heritage Awards, one for the city of Bhaktapur and the other for the Dwarika’s Hotel, where you will spend the evening.
Described as a “living, breathing museum, displaying Nepal’s best craftsmanship from the 13th century,” the hotel rooms and public areas at Dwarika’s Hotel reflect medieval architectural traditions. Every brick is handmade, every piece of wood original and centuries old.
After some time to freshen up at the hotel, drive to the outskirts of the city to the World Heritage city of Bhadgaon, also known as Bhaktapur.
Founded in the 9th century, Bhaktapur, also known as the City of Devotees, is revered for its medieval art and architecture. As you meander around Durbar Square, you will see the 55 Window Palace and Nyatapola temple, considered to be the finest example of Pagoda-style architecture.
Following your visit, return to Kathmandu and the Dwarika’s for a late lunch and check-in.
In the early evening, visit the great Stupa at Boudhnath, one of the largest of its kind in the world. Constructed in the 14th century, the stupa is built on an octagonal base, inset with prayer wheels. Boudhnath is also a center of the Tibetan community in Nepal, where you will visit a monastery.
Enjoy a cup of coffee or a cocktail at one of the cafes around Boudhanath then proceed to visit Pashupatinath Temple, a World Heritage site situated near Dwarika’s. Pashupatinath is one of the holiest Hindu temples and a major pilgrimage place dedicated to the god Shiva. Situated amidst a natural setting on the bank of the sacred Bagmati river, the temple built in pagoda style has a gilded roof and richly carved silver doors. Visitors may view from the east bank, as only Hindus are permitted to enter.
Return to the Dwarika’s for dinner and overnight.

Early in the morning, you will transfer to the airport for a flight-seeing excursion (weather permitting), soaring over glacier-clad, cloud-shrouded peaks and other landscapes around Mount Everest. Afterwards, you will return to the hotel for breakfast.
Following breakfast, you will visit Patan, one of three royal cities in the valley. Commissioned by India’s great emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century, this World Heritage Site within four stupas is known as the City of Fine Arts.
The temples around the main square are impressive as is the Patan Museum, which is housed within a picturesque palace setting. In an international campaign by UNESCO for safeguarding monuments in Kathmandu Valley, the Austrian government joined hands with Nepal to restore and preserve Patan.
Newari architectural style blossomed in the form of temples, palaces, residences and squares between the 12th and 18th centuries, representing a timelessness in Nepalese architecture and its definitive characteristics, often guided by religious and socio-cultural norms.
Next, you will see Patan’s Living Goddess, who typically acknowledges greetings of devotees from the balcony of her temple residence. Known as kumaris, Nepal’s living goddesses live in seclusion and rarely speak in public.
After a private audience with the Goddess, you will stop for lunch at “The Lawn” or similar venue.
Following lunch proceed to Kathmandu’s Durbar Square located in the heart of the city. It is also known as the Hanuman Dhoka Palace Square, after the Hindu monkey god Hanuman, who acts as a protector via a huge stone impression next to the main entrance.
Kathmandu valley has three Durbar Squares, all UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This ancient seat of Nepalese royalty displays spectacular architecture, reflecting the skill of the Newari artists over several centuries. There’s a great variety of temples dedicated to different Hindu gods and goddess, mainly constructed between the 15th and 18th centuries.
Later, there’s time for individual exploration at Asan Bazar, a great local scene, before boarding trishaws for a ride through the narrow lanes of the old city to “Thamel”, Kathmandu’s hip street. Pulsating Thamel has become a world address for international trekkers, mountaineers and curio shoppers looking for a bargain.
To get a flavor of the local scene, enjoy cocktails and dinner at the famous ‘One Tree Sam’s bar’ and then head back to your hotel for the night.
